Mystery Hill [hc] Alexander Irvine 9781906301392 Books
MYSTERY HILL is the type of book you will think about after days have gone by. It was such a satisfying short read, that I will probably buy more of Alex Irvine's short story collections. I am not usually a short story reader but this book was a lot jammed into a short space.MYSTERY HILL reminds me of some of Carl Hiasson's books, goofy characters in an interesting environment where strange things happen. The characters were kind of stock type characters, a veteran running a roadside attraction, a cute college professor, the bumbling hick. They were so well written though that they defied the stereotypes. Even the alien differed from what usual authors create.
Yes, it is short, but it is worth it.

Mystery Hill [hc] Alexander Irvine 9781906301392 Books Reviews
Great read! Ive read this sci fi before in Hardcover on loan from a mate and now I just got it for my kindle. Im enjoying it just as much maybe more this time round. Irvines characterisation is brilliant and i think Ken the 60 something washed up Vietnam veteran who owns the weird and apltly named mystery Hill is a great charachter thats so well formed i could picture him in my minds eye and the relationship between him and Fara the professor is touching. This book has a bit of everything. Lizard like Aliens, crazy characters, humour, crazy plot twists and turns. It keeps you reading as its a fastpaced and an intruiginging story thats weird but wonderful.
Mystery Hill is an interesting science fiction novel by Alex Irvine. The plot of the novel is exciting and a little bit of humor keeps you engaged from beginning to end. As the story progresses the author introduces different characters . Alex Irvine develops all the characters bit by bit. Mystery Hill is a full of suspense novel that has you screaming for more.
I haven't read anything by Alex Irvine prior to reading Mystery Hill, so I can't say anything about his other books and stories, but what I can say is that Mystery Hill is a good science fiction novella. I enjoyed reading it.
Mystery Hill is a story about a Vietnam veteran Ken Kassarjian, who runs a roadside attraction called Mystery Hill where water runs uphill and other strange things happen too. Ken's had to deal with different kind of people. One of these people is Little Boozy Boswell, who's Boozy by name and decidedly boozy by nature and makes his own kind of alien tea. Another one is Vera of the Forked Tongue, who believes she's a Reptilian alien. Things begin to change in Mystery Hill when Ken meets a young and attractive physicist, Fara Oussemitski, who comes to study the area with her scientific instruments. Ken gradually begins to notice that things are weirder than what they seem to be.
When I read Mystery Hill I thought that the author had written a homage to The X-Files, because the story reminded me of some of the episodes I've seen. It especially reminded me of the episodes written by Darin Morgan, because it contained the same kind of weird humour as these episodes. This novella was of course totally different than Darin Morgan's episodes, but the weird and fascinating atmosphere of it made me think of those episodes.
The main character, Ken Kassarjian, was an interesting man. I liked the way Alex Irvine described Ken's feelings about things and other characters. The other characters were also interesting, especially Little Boozy who seemed to be a disgusting man.
As I mentioned earlier I enjoyed reading this novella. The story was fascinatingly weird and it contained some humour. In my opinion Alex Irvine has managed to write a good and entertaining novella, which is a bit different from other new science fiction novellas. This novella shows that Alex Irvine has a good imagination and he can make the usual science fiction clichés work in his favour. I can recommend this novella to science fiction fans, who enjoy reading something a bit different.
I highly recommend this crazy action packed highly entertaining novel to misfit romantics, proprietors of roadside attractions, and scientists not afraid to go after a big idea. Also great for alien conspiracy theorists...or if like me you like a brilliantly written highy entertaining story thats a bit out of this world. The authour has fantastic imagination. So good its got to be 5 stars.
A nice read with an interesting ending. Worth a reading even if you are not Sci. Fi. fan. My wife who hates Science Fiction even enjoyed it.
I loved this book. Good, solid "what the hell is going on" story without all of the unnecessary gore. Just enough to keep you riveted. Excellent story, well written and solid characters. Definitely recommend.
Love it!!!
